The Aardt Foundation is a nonprofit foundation operating out of a former industrial warehouse in Birmingham, Alabama, which now houses its art collection. The Foundation’s mission is to foster a vibrant cultural life, including through the use of its collection and resources for educational and research purposes.
The United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in a spirit of both celebration and reflection. It is in this context that the Aardt Foundation presents this virtual exhibition, installed in a digital twin of an industrial warehouse in Alabama, on ways that communities of artists have dealt with distinctively American landscapes, exploring the nature and effects of both natural and artificial light.
The Foundation’s collection encompasses works dating from the early Renaissance to the present, reflecting a wide spectrum of distinct cultures and forms of expression, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, book-making, decorative arts, and new media.
The Aardt Foundation advances its mission through a range of scholarly and public-facing initiatives, including tours, educational panels, public engagements, loans of artworks, web-based interaction, and the publication of critical and interpretive materials.
